As a traveler, many people know that enjoying good food is a huge part of experiencing local culture. In addition to simply nourishing our bodies, food is also a way for people to connect and show love for one another. Although Hungarian food may not be at the top of everyone’s bucket list as far as cuisines are concerned, you might be surprised that one of the best things to do in Budapest is eat! From simple coffee shops to luxurious fine dining, there’s something for everyone at these top 5 Budapest restaurants.

Mazel Tov
Located in the city center, this dog-friendly eatery focuses on creating an inviting atmosphere and bringing visitors unique, high quality meals. The courtyard dining area is decorated with lush greenery and covered by skylights to create a sundrenched garden atmosphere. Their menu features a variety of dishes on their Israeli fusion menu with plenty of vegan and gluten free options available. It’s the perfect place for date night or catching up with friends after work. See TripAdvisor reviews.

Bambi Cafe

Take a step back in time at Bambi Cafe for a can’t miss experience and quick, budget-friendly breakfast. Opened in 1961, this retro cafe still contains all of the original interior furnishings from the time period when cafes like this one served dark roast coffee, beer, and affordable, basic foods under Communist rule. This cafe is popular among locals as well as visitors and features simple menu items like toasted sandwiches, scrambled eggs, and Hungarian pastries. Their prices are unbeatable for the value of the experience!

Beerstro 14

Although most people would consider the highlight of this modern bistro their 14 rotating taps of craft beer selections, the food menu has just as much to offer. Their unique menu features a variety of steak options as well as other upscale versions of classic pub fare like burgers, fish and chips, vegan options, and more. The building itself is spacious, modern, and trendy and previous guests have remarked that the only thing better than the food and beer is the excellent customer service! Check out their Instagram.

Szimpla Kert

A trip to Budapest would not be complete without stopping at one of the world famous ruin bars! Although this bar is more well known for its quirky decor, walls of graffiti, and live music than it is for food, the farmer’s market is a can’t miss. Each Sunday from 9am-2pm, suburban farmers set up shop throughout the building selling fresh meat, cheese, bread, and other street foods. After shopping in the market, head upstairs to Mad Scientist for a pint from one of the area’s best microbreweries.

Costes Downtown

For a fine dining experience, head over to this Michelin star restaurant located in the heart of downtown Budapest. Although most fine dining restaurants can feel a bit stuffy at times, Costes offers guests a welcoming and friendly atmosphere without any compromise to quality. Try out their tasting menu offered every evening from Wednesday through Saturday for a taste of their best special dishes. The tasting menu features either a four-course or six-course option complete with wine, beer, cocktails, or non-alcoholic drink pairings.
